Let’s be real: if anyone reblogging this actually gave even 1/10th of a fuck about the riots in Kiev, this post would educate people about what’s happening rather than pulling this hurr-I don’t-care-about-pop-culture-I-read-The-Atlantic moral superiority bullshit.
So, I’ll do it: Late last year, the Ukrainian president backed out of a treaty with the EU to appease Russia. Citizens protested. To end the demonstrations, a bunch of new laws targeting them were enacted, including making protests without government approval illegal. Police shot a couple protesters. So, now peaceful pro-EU demonstrations have turned into an all-out riot against government corruption, and there’s extreme police brutality against protesters (intimidation, deaths, even reports of torture) and protesters violently retaliating against police and taking over government buildings. And these protests are popping up in other Ukrainian cities now, with activists calling for the resignation of several government officials. And the prime minister has just resigned.
And, yo, you are totally allowed to care about world events and pop culture.
